CHAPTER NINE

Grabbing a clean shirt from his tiny closet, Grady mulled over the events of the previous night.

Everything had been fine when Caitlyn descended the stairs, wearing that skimpy T-shirt and little else.

Mighty fine.

He’d planned the food and wine section of the evening, but not the making out part. And certainly not the part when he’d held her after. With Caitlyn, those quiet moments were the most intimate. He’d felt he knew her a little better, that they’d made a real connection.

But she’d fooled him, and he wasn’t easily duped.

He’d fallen for her theatrics, for the quiver in her voice, for her tears. And, for the coup de grâce, she’d tested out her TV ghost on him to gauge an audience’s reaction.

He’d almost fallen for it, too. Almost fallen for her.

He slammed the closet door, his hand lingering on its fake wood—a poor substitute for the warmth of Caitlyn’s skin.

One day, he’d be grateful. Grateful she’d shown her true nature now, and exposed herself as a woman so shallow, so obsessed with fame that she’d use Brianna’s tragic death to get a TV show off the ground.

When a knock sounded, Grady crossed to the door of his trailer, tucking away his anger as he tucked his shirt into his jeans.

His sister stood on the other side of the door, one hand poised as if to knock a second time. Her other hand held a kids’-sized umbrella—pink with Disney princesses on it. Most likely borrowed from the eight-year-old Ina. Ivy’s pink days were long gone.

Ellen huddled beneath the rain-splattered umbrella, protecting her somber business suit and flashy beaded necklace. “You’re dressed. Great. I’m hoping to catch a ride with you again this morning. If you’re ready to leave right away.”

“No problem. What’s up?”

She closed the umbrella and stepped into the trailer. “We found Isabella Quarrington alive. Her assailant knocked her out, abducted her, blinded her, and left her for dead on the side of a road.”

“Blinded her? But she’s an artist, right?

“Yeah.”

Grady winced. “Is she going to make it?”

“The early news is encouraging—for both her health and the investigation. Once she’s out of surgery, the lead detective on her case expects to get a description of her kidnapper.” Ellen paused for a breath. “Oh, and remember that woman who came into my office while you were there? Caitlyn Glasberg? The one with the visions?”

He schooled his features. “Vaguely.”

“She called me.”

“When?”

“Yesterday afternoon. Left a message.”

Before he’d shown up at her house. Before their argument. “What did she say?”

“She told me about her latest premonitions. Being the dubious, but dutiful detective I am, I passed her tip on to the team investigating Quarrington’s kidnapping. They stepped up their searches for her in the same vicinity where Dominique Arden was dumped and, voilà, they found Isabella.”

The tips Caitlyn had given may have been guesses—the kind of conjecture would-be psychics made all the time for attention. “I take it there’ll be a press conference and Glasberg will be there.” Back in a starring role, at last.
